Cynthia Vigliotti joined YSU’s English department in 2002. She specializes in theoretical and applied linguistics, as well as TESOL pedagogy. Her research interests include the evolution of slang, the Youngstown dialect, and teacher preparation.
She is co-author of the linguistics textbook, Understanding Language: Structure, Interaction, and Variation, 3e, from Michigan University Press (2014) and is currently at work on completing her dissertation, “Stigmatization of International College Students in the English Placement Process,” which addresses the effects of placement into mainstream composition courses versus ESL-specific composition sections.
At YSU, she regularly teaches courses required for linguistics minors and students pursuing TESOL certification. Courses such as Introduction to Language, Sociolinguistics, Language Acquisition, Advanced Linguistics and Linguistics & Literacy, are offered at both the undergraduate and graduate level.
