Steel Bridge Team wins regional, heads for national competition
Youngstown State University’s Steel Bridge Team won the right to compete on the national level when it took first place in the regional Steel Bridge Competition recently at Ohio State University.
The 12-member team, an American Society of Civil Engineers YSU Student Chapter, competed against fifteen colleges and universities from Ohio, Kentucky and Western Pennsylvania including Carnegie Mellon University, the University of Cinncinati, the Univerity of Pittsburgh and Ohio State University. The team will compete in the National Student Steel Bridge Competition at Oregon State University May 26 and 27.
Tommy Carnes was captain of YSU’s championship winning steel bridge team, and Miranda DeFuria was captain of YSU’s second-place concrete canoe team. Out of seven events, YSU also placed first in the concrete horseshoe competition and second in the environmental design competition.
Other team members are: Kenny Anderson, Montana Gessler, Greg Lipp, Leah McConnell, David Mendenhall, Jake Millerleile, Nico Pagley, Julian Rosales, Spencer DeSalvo and Karen Schilling. Anwarul Islam, professor and chair of Civil, Environmental and Chemical Engineering, is the team’s faculty adviser.
