YSU student journalists rake in more awards
Weeks after raking in several statewide awards, The Jambar is now receiving 10 national awards from the Society of Collegiate Journalists, including three first-place honors.
The Ohio News Media Association announced last month that The Jambar, Youngstown State University’s student newspaper, captured 10 awards, including four first-place honors, in the statewide 2021 Ohio Collegiate Newspaper Competition.
Now, SCJ has announced 10 awards for The Jambar in its annual national journalism contest. SCJ also announced one award for YO Magazine, YSU’s student-run university magazine.
SCJ is the nation’s oldest honor society for leaders in student media and has approximately 100 active chapters and 1,200 members.
The winners:
- News Stories – First place, Gabrielle Owens – “YSU Implements Bring Your Own Device Labs” (The Jambar).
- Enterprise Series – First place, Brianna Gleghorn – “YSU advising strategies differ from college to college/Advising adjustments coming for YSU colleges” (The Jambar).
- Column or Commentary – First place, Frances Clause – “For those who need to see this: Mental health matters” (YO Magazine).
- Continuing Coverage – Second place, Abigail Cloutier – “YSU Faculty Strike Continuing Coverage” (The Jambar).
- Television News Show Overall Excellence – Third place, JambarTV – JambarTV Fall 2020 (Episode 3) / Abigail Cloutier, Kelcey Norris, Thomas Kushner, Monica Kurjan and JambarTV Staff.
- Breaking News – Third place, Amanda Joerndt – “YSU Implements COVID-19 Emergency fund for students in need” (The Jambar).
- Enterprise Series – Third place, Abigail Cloutier/Kelcey Norris – “YSU Restructuring Series” (The Jambar).
- Beat Reporting – Third place, Douglas Campbell/Krista Ritz – “Arts & Entertainment Beat Reporting” (The Jambar).
- Editorial – Third place, Jambar Staff – “Student loan debt is crippling us” (The Jambar).
- Sports Column – Honorable mention, Ben Luli – “This week in YSU Sports History: Top five Halloween-themed team nicknames” (The Jambar).
- Breaking News – Honorable mention, Gabrielle Owens – “YSU shuttle services halted” (The Jambar).
YSU’s print student media adviser is Mary Beth Earnheardt, associate professor of Journalism, and YSU’s electronic student media consultant is Chelsea Simeon, digital executive producer at WKBN/WYTV. Also assisting are Mary Dota, YSU business operations specialist, and Ryan Donchess, YSU coordinator of media engineering technology.
