“88 Hearts for YSU” is the name of a new scholarship established by Caroline Oltmanns, professor of Piano at the Dana School of Music, for piano students attending Youngstown State University.
The title of the scholarship is homage to the 88 keys on a piano.
Donors have the opportunity to contribute $114 per key to fully endow the scholarship to $10,000. Amy and Patrick Martinucci, whose son Luke, 12, currently studies with Dana faculty member Sean Baran and participates in master classes and recitals in the piano studio of Caroline Oltmanns, provided the contribution allowing the scholarship to be fully endowed.
Oltmanns established the endowment in 2015 to provide an annual scholarship to a piano student in the Dana School of Music. She said, “This gift is an opportunity to show my appreciation for the university and community that have supported my musical career.”
The scholarship is administered by the YSU Foundation. Students must be enrolled in the Dana School of Music working on a Bachelor of Music or BA in Applied Music degree and must be majoring or minoring in piano. A minimum 2.5 GPA is required. While there is no residency requirement, financial need is a consideration and a FAFSA must be completed. The one-year scholarship is renewable through the application and selection process, which is made by the faculty of the Dana School of Music in conjunction with the YSU Foundation, for a maximum of eight semesters.
Additional contributions are being accepted to further bolster the endowment, and may be made through the YSU Foundation by contacting Ms. Chaney Nezbeth, Development Officer, at 330-941-3211.
Oltmanns has been a member of the Dana faculty since 1994. A seasoned performer and clinician, Oltmanns offers an array of solo recitals and concert tours along with new creative paths in the co-production and performance of the concept show “Crumb’s Kaleidoscope.” Past seasons have included concerto appearances with Youngstown Symphony, Johnson City Symphony Orchestra, Harburger
Orchester Akademie, and Cleveland Philharmonic Orchestra in addition to the commission, premiere and recording of several new concerti. Oltmanns has produced and recorded five solo CDs on the Filia Mundi label; her playing has been broadcast globally on radio and TV stations. As an International Steinway Artist, Fulbright Scholar, and recipient of the Stipendium der deutschen Wirtschaft, she holds degrees from the Staatliche Musikhochschule Freiburg and the University of Southern California in Los Angeles.
