Housing and Dining/Meal Plan Accommodations

YSU provides housing and dining accommodations for students with a documented qualifying medical, physical or psychological disability on a case by case basis.  Students living on campus in the residence halls who wish to be considered for any type of accommodation, must register with the Accessibility Services Office, as early as possible, for approval.  Please see information below for more guidance regarding your specific accommodation type.

Housing Accommodations

Students who wish to live in the residence halls can find more information about the application process at YSU Housing & Residence Life .  Students living on campus who wish to request a housing accommodation should reach out to the Office of Accessibility Services to schedule an appointment to learn about how to register and request a formal accommodation.  This process asks students to provide clear information about what their needs are and how it is related to a medical condition or disability.

Before making an appointment with Accessibility Services, students should

1.  Have their physician/medical provider complete the Documentation Form for Qualified Professionals OR provide Accessibility Services with an official letter on letterhead that confirms the length of treatment/patient-provider relationship, the diagnosed condition, and what accommodation is necessary for the wellbeing of the student.

2) Complete Accessibility Services Registration Form.

3) Call Accessibility Services at 330-941-1372 to schedule an appointment.

Students should complete this process prior to the start of their first semester if possible to allow enough time for accommodations to be established.

Generally, accommodation requests related to room assignments need to be completed by June 30th to guarantee the assignment needed for the upcoming school year. Requests for accommodations aside from the beginning of the academic year should be submitted at least 6 weeks before the resident is moving in. Please follow the process for as early as possible to get your request in for housing accommodations.  Frequent housing Accommodation requests Accessibility Services receives are:

  • Medical Single Room
  • Assistive Alerting Devices
  • Wheelchair Accessible Facilities
  • Emotional Support Animals

The availability of medical single rooms are limited. Students must have their accommodation request approved before June 30th each year. The availability of these options is limited. If requesting this accommodation there must be a clear rationale and explanation of the necessity of the accommodation eliminates a barrier to access.

Emotional Support Animals

To comply with HUD regulations Assistance Animals including Emotional Support Animals are permitted in YSU Residence halls and the Courtyard Apartments. Information on how to request an ESA is on the Accessibility Services Website.  Generally,  Emotional Support Animals are not permitted in any YSU building aside from the Residence Hall where the student resides. ESAs are usually not covered under the ADA for places of public accommodation like service animals. Please visit the Service Animal and ESA page for clarification. Violation of terms stated in the Assistance Animal Housing Agreement and other campus policies regarding animals on campus are considered Student Code of Conduct Violations.

Dining & Meal Plan Accommodations

Students with dietary needs related to medical conditions or allergies often find the options they need at Christman Dining Commons and other on campus eateries to be enjoyable and accommodating. Options are easily accessible for nut allergies, lactose or gluten sensitivities or Celiac disease. Students should firstly review information provided by Chartwells Dining regarding what options and tools are available for students with specific needs and dietary types to easily and safely plan their meals on a daily basis.  This page is a great place to find that information.  Students should connect with a member from the Chartwells Dining team to follow up with additional questions before registering with Accessibility Service to see if their needs can easily be accommodated through existing options.  Students seeking dietary accommodations for reasons that are not disability-related (including religious or personal reasons) may also contact the Chartwells Dining team to discuss their options.

If students do not feel that their needs and restrictions cannot be accommodated with information that is available, or after talking to a member from the Chartwells Dining team, need to register to request a formal accommodation from Accessibility services should:

1)  have their physician/medical provider complete the Documentation Form for Qualified Professionals OR provide Accessibility Services with an official letter  on letterhead that confirms the length of treatment/patient-provider relationship, the diagnosed condition, and what accommodation is necessary for the wellbeing of the student.

2) Complete Accessibility Services Registration Form .

3) Call Accessibility Services at 30-941-1372 to schedule an appointment.

This process asks students to provide clear information about what their needs are and how it is related to a medical condition or disability. After making an appointment with Accessibility Services, students should 1) complete Accessibility Services Registration Form and then 2) have their physician/medical provider complete the Documentation Form for Qualified Professionals OR provide Accessibility Services with an official letter that confirms the length of treatment/patient-provider relationship, the diagnosed condition, and what accommodation is necessary for the wellbeing of the student.  Students should complete this process prior to the start of their first semester if possible to allow enough time for accommodations to be established.
