Graduate Assistant Intern for Residential Education

The Graduate Assistant Intern (GAI) for Residential Education works in coordination with departmental leadership to plan and implement social and educational programs to ensure that students receive an enhanced and all-encompassing residential experience. It is imperative that this individual is enthusiastic and passionate about programming and remains abreast of global affairs and issues affecting college students in order to remain proactive and impactful in programming approach and educational focus.

Specific areas of responsibility may include, but are not limited to:

  • Plans and implements residence life programs designed to foster student development and enhance community by featuring social and educational programs that focus on diversity and identity, alcohol and drug education, wellness and sex education, fiscal management, conflict resolution, and self-advocacy.
  • Coordinates and supports development of events and programs in a thorough manner during all stages, including:
    • Brainstorming and planning in a way that considers global issues, student needs and includes departmental feedback
    • Planning and coordination of resources that may include collaboration with other university stakeholders and student groups
    • Marketing and advertisement of programs in a creative and timely manner
    • Logistical setup, day of event support, and supervision of student staff teams
    • Post-program assessment
  • Works in collaboration with academic colleges and University stakeholders to support special student populations (such as international students, student-athletes and students in the Honors College) and housing initiatives such as Living Learning Communities and theme housing initiatives, to ensure that the experience provided to students with this membership is meaningful.
  • May assist in planning and presenting educational content at Fall and Winter RA Trainings and ongoing RA seminars throughout the academic year, to support the ongoing training and development of undergraduate student staff
  • Serve as a liaison between Housing & Residence Life and other campus agencies to facilitate collaborative programming and education
  • Regularly attend meetings to become familiar with students involved in Residence Hall Association and collaborate in planning student programs

Additional areas of responsibility include:

  • Attend professional and paraprofessional staff meetings as requested
  • Represent Housing at large scale recruitment events (such as Penguin Preview Days, Experience Y Days and Orientation dates)

SUPERVISION: Reports directly to the Associate Director for Residence Life

DATES: This posting is currently a one-year appointment only, with possible second year extension. Preferred start date in early August to be present to assist in coordination of RA staff training, Welcome Week and Fall program planning. Some availability over Winter Break to assist with Spring programming and Spring training efforts is also preferred (any work during non-academic/non-stipend periods would be compensated with an hourly rate of pay at $12/hr). Summer student employment may be available and is dependent on department’s needs.

HOURS: 20 hours a week

COMPENSATION: Furnished apartment and meal plan, tuition remission and a $7,500 stipend during the academic year (paid in bi-monthly increments)

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor’s Degree, full-time enrollment in a graduate program at YSU. Experience in Housing & Residence Life as an undergraduate and/or experience with educational programming or philanthropic services preferred.

Due to the unique focus of this role on residential programming and events for residential students, qualified applicants must be willing and able to work evening and weekend hours. Please check your program’s requirements and class schedule to see if you will have availability during these times.
