Working Class Studies Association

Working-Class Studies Association

The WCSA How Class Works Conference was held in Stony Brook, New York, June 7 – 9, 2012.

The Working-Class Studies Association brings together scholars, students, teachers, activists, artists, and workers who share an interest in working-class life, culture, history, and politics.

If you are . . .

  • Someone who values critical debate about how to define and promote the interests of the working class
  • Someone who believes in the importance of connecting class with issues of race, gender, sexuality, nationality, and other categories
  • An academic from a working-class background who struggles against marginalization, invisibility, and discomfort
  • A teacher of working-class students who wants to help your students find their way in the academy without repudiating their class origins
  • A scholar of labor history, working-class literature, images of class in art or popular culture, social stratification, labor geography, and other fields who wants to share your work with colleagues across disciplines and to contribute to a diverse critical discussion about working-class life and culture
  • An activist for working-class causes who wants to gain insight and share stories about working-class struggles and perspectives in a changing global economy
  • A working-class artist who wants to find audiences and to learn together with scholars, students, and activists

. . . then you belong in the WCSA.

The WCSA provides a place where you can meet others who share your interests, your issues, your visions.  The WCSA connects you to an international network that encourages interactions between labor historians and working-class poets, community college composition teachers and labor economists, union organizers and labor geographers, graduate students and established scholars.  The WCSA sponsors critical debates about theories of class, organizing strategies, contemporary politics, history, and culture.  We believe in the value of conversations across perspectives and fields, conversations that value working-class voices and international views.  We invite you to join the WCSA!
