Measuring Up

Youngstown State University prides itself on the high quality of its teacher candidates and the strong performance of its graduates in classrooms throughout northeastern Ohio and beyond. This page summarizes data about our programs, our candidates, and our graduates.

The edTPA is a national assessment, developed by Stanford University in collaboration with Pearson Education, Inc., designed to measure the planning, instruction, and assessment skills of student teachers. Each student teacher is required to plan and teach a series of lessons with a central focus, assess student learning related to specific objectives, and modify instruction based on assessment results. The edTPA challenges teacher candidates to enhance the learning of P-12 students through emphasis on higher-order thinking—analysis, evaluation, and problem-solving rather than just memorization—and students’ use of academic language, which helps scaffold their learning of more complex material.

This report, which is also available online through the Ohio Board of Regents, includes a variety of statistics on our programs, candidates, and graduates, including pass rates on licensure exams, impact on P-12 student learning of recent graduates, characteristics of schools in which these graduates have been teaching, test scores for candidates admitted to our programs, and clinical and field experience requirements of our candidates.

This document includes a brief snapshot of our teacher preparation programs, other programs offered by the Beeghly College of Education, and the College mission. It includes a variety of assessment and other performance data, including mean GPA for our graduates, performance in student teaching, average scores for assessments linked to the Ohio Standards for the Teaching Profession, and College accreditation. Several innovative features of the College and its programs are also highlighted.
