The 81st Annual Juried Student Art & Design Exhibition sponsored by the Student Art Association features works by students enrolled in the Department of Art at YSU. The exhibition opens on March 24 and continues through April 7 at the John J. McDonough Museum of Art. Artists will be honored at a reception and awards ceremony on Friday, March 24 from 6-8 pm. The identity design for the exhibition was created by Lorenzo Devine, a current graphic design major in the Department of Art.
Awards presented at 7 pm during the opening reception range from cash awards to gift certificates. Local businesses and individuals have generously supported the annual exhibition every year. Award categories include photography, painting, sculpture, digital media, graphic and interactive design. Don’t miss this opportunity to witness the strength, breadth and diversity of YSU’s Department of Art. The awards reception and ceremony are free and open to the public.
We are honored to Adam Welch as the juror of the exhibition. He is an artist, musician and curator who has exhibited regionally and internationally. He is the recipient of the 2009 Individual Artists Fellowship in Installation/Sculpture from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts and was awarded the 2008 Emerging Artist of the Year award by the Pittsburgh Center for the Arts. From 2008-2015 he served as the Curator at Pittsburgh Filmmakers/Pittsburgh Center for the Arts where he curated over 60 solo and group exhibits of regional and national artists. Also, he has overseen and organized over 30 group and solo exhibits of regional guilds, associations and international artists. Welch holds an MFA from the Indiana University of Pennsylvania and a BA from SUNY Stony Brook University Art.

INTERSECTIONS, the Biennial Faculty Exhibition, will be on display at the John J. McDonough Museum of Art from January 21 - February 26. Intersections is an exploration of innovation and tradition. This biennial exhibition of current research by Department of Art faculty imparts new vision and re-investigates long standing practices in the fields of Art and Design. An opening reception will take place on Thursday, January 21 from 6-8pm.

FACULTY TALKS
On Wednesday, January 27 at 12:30pm Adam Sullivan will present a lecture, “Taking Care” in the Museum Galleries. He is an artist who works in paper, illustration, and painting. He is guided by both frustration and delight in the innate properties of a medium, and considers the material limitations a medium imposes a vital influence on his working method: the inscrutable symbolism and manic fantasy of his paper works are a product of the graphic simplicity and clarity of the hard-edged, unmodulated forms of cut paper along with the possibility for free association entailed in collage, while the Spartan somberness and sobriety of all the oil portraits derive from a self-imposed limited palette and the requirement that a painting be finished alla prima.
Lauren Baker will be speaking on Tuesday, February 2 at 5:00pm in the Museum Auditorium. She received her MFA in sculpture from Cranbrook Academy of Art. Her work has been exhibited in Colorado, Florida, Michigan, Ohio and Vermont, and is in the collections of Kent State University and Mercedes Benz Financial Services. She is the recipient of many awards including a recent grant to attend Vermont Studio Center last June. She currently lives in Massillon, Ohio where she maintains her studio and is an adjusted professor in the Department of Art at YSU.
On Wednesday, February 3 at 1:30pm, Dr. Lillian Lewis will present “Commodity, Culture and Collaboration.” She is an Assistant Professor of Art Education at YSU. Dr. Lewis received her Ph.D. in Art Education with a graduate minor in Art History from The Pennsylvania State University. She received her MA in Art Education and was awarded a Graduate Certificate in Museum Education from the Univeristy of North Texas. Her text-based and studio research explores relationships between digital and analog learning communities in school and non-school settings, the nature of collaboration in the context of research and the role of institutional critique in social justice.
RJ Thompson, a practicing graphic designer, graphic design educator, and entrepreneur currently teaching graphic, web, and interactive design at YSU, will give a lecture entitled The City of You: Rebranding Youngstown, Ohio in the Museum Galleries on Thursday, February 11 at noon. The City of You was developed by RJ and his Youngstown Design Works students. The campaign was part of an economic development strategy offering a new narrative focus for Youngstown and was part of a federal grant received from the Economic Development Administration.
On Tuesday, February 23 at 5:00pm, Dana Sperry, currently Associate Professor and Digital Media area coordinator will present a lecture in the auditorium. He will be talking about a series of video and coded-based generative artworks that explore themes of isolation and anxiety of contemporary life. In addition, he will talk about his collaboration with Natalya Pinchuk titled “Dreaming Youngstown.” This social practice project focusing on brainstorming potential futures for vacant lots and buildings will act as a counterpoint to his solo work. The talk will explore different ways he attempts to create meaning and explore the potential of “art” marking.

We are honored to have as the juror for the exhibition, Theresa Bembnister, Associate Curator at the Akron Art Museum. She received her MA in Art History and Museum Studies from Case Western Reserve University and a BFA from the Kansas City Art Institute. Her writing has appeared in Cleveland’s Scene, Kansas City’s Pitch, the Kansas City Star, Glasstire.com and Arthopper.org.

The John J. McDonough Museum of Art, on the campus of Youngstown State University, will open the Spring Graduating BFA Show, a collaboration with the Department of Art at YSU. The exhibition features work by students achieving completion of the Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree. An opening reception for the artists will be held on Friday evening, April 22, from 6 to 8 pm. The exhibit will remain on view in the Museum’s galleries through May 6.
Students in the Department of Art work closely with nationally and internationally known faculty engaged in a broad range of art and design practices. Immersed in the quest for knowledge and creative self-realization, students embrace the advantages of professional studio and design programs. The Graduating BFA Show is the opportunity for students to share the original and innovative discoveries they have made in their artistic journeys communicating to the public their creative expressions of human experience.
The Spring Graduating BFA Show celebrates the work of 14 students in the areas of graphic + interactive design, painting, printmaking, photography, interdisciplinary studies and 3D studies. Dawoud Bey: Picturing People

Dawoud Bey will be YSU’s African American History Month Keynote Speaker. The lecture will take place in the McDonough Galleries followed by a reception, co-sponsored by the Africana Studies Program, McDonough Museum of Art and the Department of Art’s Distinguished Artist Lecture Series.
The John J. McDonough Museum of Art presents Dawoud Bey: Picturing People, an expansive career survey of the Chicago-based photographer, which ranges from street encounters to formal studio portraits. Dawoud Bey is distinguished for his commitment to portraiture as a means for understanding contemporary society, first gaining notoriety as a photographer for his acclaimed series Harlem USA, exhibited at The Studio Museum in Harlem in 1979.
Since 2010, Bey has been photographing two individuals that, although members of the same socio-geographic community, are strangers to one another. Casually positioned side-by-side, between them are differences in age, race, comportment, gender, etc., calling into question the terms on which community is imagined in relation to self and vice versa.
The 50 images in Picturing People, organized by The Renaissance Society at the University of Chicago, represent the evolution of Bey’s work in the three decades since, during which time he continued his portraiture of primarily African-American and teenage subjects. The photographs will be on display from January 22 - March 7.

We are honored to have as the juror of the exhibition, William Busta, Director of the William Busta Gallery, a gallery representing contemporary artists in Northeast Ohio. He opened his first gallery in Cleveland in Little Italy in 1989. After closing that space in the 1990s, Busta reopened with a gallery on Detroit Avenue in what is now the Gordon Square Arts District. Currently his gallery is on Prospect Ave., just east of the Cleveland State University. He is also an independent curator in Cleveland who has curated several exhibitions including Living in Your Imagination: SPACES 30th Anniversary Exhibition, The Persistence of Conscience: Lilian Tyrrell Textiles and Drawings 1979-2005, Mist, Smoke and Mirror: Artists and the Cuyahoga Valley for Cleveland Artists Foundation and Faith in My Possibilities for Lafayette College Gallery (Easton, Pennsylvania).

The John J. McDonough Museum of Art, on the campus of Youngstown State University, will open Gary Taneri | New Work, a collaboration with M Gallery at Erie Terminal Place. On view June 9 through July 31 at 112 West Commerce Street in downtown Youngstown, the exhibit features 14 new paintings by Warren native Gary Taneri. A public reception for the artist will be held on Friday evening, July 10, from 5 to 7 pm.
Gary has been painting since 1977. Sharpening his skills of observation and developing a painterly style, his repertoire includes portraits, still-lifes and painting en plein-air. Featured in the exhibition are 5 large paintings from a series inspired by vintage Polaroids of his family.
His award winning work has been shown in national, regional and local exhibitions, including at the Butler Institute of American Art and the Trumbull Art Gallery.

The John J. McDonough Museum of Art, YSU’s Center for Contemporary Art, celebrates 25 years of public programs. To kick off the fall season the Museum has organized a 25 year retrospective exhibition featuring works by artists from New York, LA, Cleveland, Cuba and beyond. Over 100 pieces, previously exhibited in the Museum’s galleries, have been donated for auction.

“Voices of the Valley” recorded by StoryCorp

ABOUT VOICES OF THE VALLEY
The McDonough Museum of Art reached out to StoryCorps, inviting them to record and chronicle a representative cross-section of our community and their aspirations. The result will be “Voices of the Valley” - 30 conversations recorded over five days. We asked eight community based organizations noted above to come up with a list of community leaders who would form “Voices of the Valley.” 60 individuals were selected who, through entrepreneurship, redevelopment, technology, activism, faith and a deep connection to community, share their stories about transforming the Valley.
THE EXHIBITION
From June 24 to July 26, the McDonough Museum of Art will function as a “Voices of the Valley” listening center where visitors can hear the 30 conversations in individual, quiet, comfortable spaces using a variety of sound devices.
The public is also invited to participate in “Share Your Story Booth.” A recording booth that follows the style and spirit of StoryCorps will be available in the Museum for 25 minute conversations. Hours are limited so please grab a friend or family member and make a reservation. Participants will receive a copy of their recording and the possible inclusion in “DIGITAL MAAG”, a digital archive at Maag Library accessible to the public.
STORYCORPS
StoryCorps is an independent nonprofit whose mission is to provide people of all backgrounds and beliefs with the opportunity to record, share and preserve the stories or our lives. Since 2003, StoryCorps has collected and archived more than 40,000 interviews from nearly 80,000 participants. Each conversation is recorded on a free CD to share and is preserved at the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress. StoryCorps is one of the largest oral history projects of its kind and millions listen to their weekly broadcasts on NPR’s Morning Edition, at storycorps.org, and through their podcast.

The Graduating BFA Show is the opportunity for students to share the original and innovative discoveries they have made in their artistic journeys communicating to the public their creative expressions of human experience.
The Spring Graduating BFA Show celebrates the work of 23 students in the areas of graphic + interactive design, painting, photography, interdisciplinary studies and 3D studies. Students participating in this exhibition are Melanie Arnold, Blade Birch, Keeley Black, Devon Carr, Jenilee Daubenspeck, Brittany Dunlap, Kathleen Gallagher, Korey Herron, Paya Herron, Jaclyn Hill, Christopher Kamykowski, Sarah Kotlinski, Sara Oliver, Jamie Olmstead, Erika Olson, Jason Penezich, Joseph Perry, Lisa Perry, Susan Rowe, Natalie Shipula, Andrew Thomas and Joy White.
