Studio Art Major
What You'll Study
Your first year in the Art program will help you establish a common core of knowledge and techniques in all areas of art. You’ll take courses in a variety of areas, benefit from small class sizes and a personalized educational approach, and also meet with faculty one-on-one for advisement on your future focus area within the major. Your first year culminates with the Foundation Portfolio Review, where your work will be evaluated for admittance into your chosen track.
Once admitted into the major through a focused track, you’ll begin working toward the Junior Portfolio Review at the end of your sophomore year. The work you submit will be reviewed to maintain a standard of excellence needed to complete your degree. Specialized area faculty will evaluate your work in a critique forum, focusing on progress, skill level and needs. The review process is a tool for guiding you toward your strengths and expanding your talent in your chosen direction.
As you continue to progress in the major, you’ll benefit from a unique curriculum structure. Rather than following a regimented curriculum over the next three years, you will follow a curriculum that allows you the flexibility to define your courses based on your interests. The diverse experience of our faculty and wide range of class offerings provides numerous combinations of elective and requirement courses. Your customized curriculum gives you an expansive body of work and an educational experience that is uniquely your own.
The Department of Art also offers various minor programs for non-Art majors.
