The general eligibility requirements for Federal Aid include that a student be a U.S. citizen or eligible noncitizen, be enrolled in an eligible degree or certificate program and demonstrate financial need (derived from the FAFSA). Students planning on securing student loans must be enrolled at least half-time to be eligible for funding. Additional enrollment eligibility requirements are discussed below.
The majority of Youngstown State University students borrow loans at some point during their college education. The Office of Financial Aid and Scholarships, however, can provide students with the tools and support to help budget appropriately and manage debt upon graduation.
Federal and State of Ohio regulations require that Youngstown State University review the academic progress of students annually, whether they are a previous aid recipient or not. SAP is evaluated during the spring semester.
Verification is a process that all universities receiving federal aid are required to complete. The purpose of verification is not to find fraudulent FAFSA applicants, but to find and correct common mistakes made during the filing of the FAFSA. All need-based aid packaging must be put on hold until a student provides the necessary information requested through the verification process.
