Intern of the Year BioNatalie Dando, a senior from Green, Ohio, is pursuing a major in mathematics with a minor in chemistry. Dando spent the summer of 2024 at Clarkson University in Potsdam, New York to participate in the Mathematical Biology Team Science Research Experience for Undergraduates (MBioTS REU), funded by the National Science Foundation. Dando worked on a team of mathematics and biology students to study the impacts of spatial structure on antibiotic resistance evolution of Pseudomonas aeruginosa (PA), which commonly affects cystic fibrosis patients and other immuno-compromised individuals. She spent many days in the lab collecting growth and motility rates of different strains of PA, which along with her team used to develop a continuous-time stochastic model of the PA evolution process. Upon completion of her undergraduate studies, Dando plans to pursue a PhD in mathematics and conduct mathematical biology research. | CO-OP of the Year BioMichelle Ani is a junior majoring in Biology with a minor in Chemistry at Youngstown State University. In the summer of 2024, Michelle participated in a 10-week research internship at the Silva Lab in the Biomedical Engineering Department of the James McKelvey School of Engineering at Washington University in St. Louis (WashU). This internship was funded by the American Heart Association (AHA) as part of the Summer Undergraduate Research Experience (SURE). During the internship, she conducted research on hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and was awarded the Best Research Award. Originally from Enugu, Nigeria, Michelle is determined to contribute to global healthcare and improve healthcare systems in her home country. She aims to bridge the gap between clinical practice and research to improve patient outcomes in cardiovascular diseases worldwide and aspires to become a physician-scientist. She has been actively involved in academic organizations and extracurricular activities, including founding the International Pre-Health Student Association, which empowers and supports international pre-health students. |

A student must have registered the internship or co-op to be eligible for this award. The following information and supporting documents are required for a complete application for the Intern of the Year or Co-op of the Year Award.
The judges will not be rating the resume, rather using it as a guide to gain a better understanding of the student and make potential suggestions for making the application stronger for potential submission to other awards!
The judges will be reviewing each nomination to see how well the student integrated the experiential learning experience into his/her academic and career pursuits.
The judges will be reviewing each nomination for details/examples of how the student’s work-related duties as well as both the quantity and quality of their work positively impacted the company/organization.
Application Deadline: October 10, 2025
A Selection Committee of 3 YSU College of STEM faculty and staff from various departments review all student award nomination packets for both awards.
