- How do students sign-up for tutoring?
Students wishing to meet with a tutor can schedule an appointment at any time by visiting Tutor Trac. There is also a link to our services available in your course Blackboard page.
- How often do students meet with a tutor?
Appointments are set to recur on a weekly basis, at the same day and time with the same tutor. Small groups are typically formed in high demand courses. Students are encouraged to sign-up early as the availability for both in-person and online sessions may become limited throughout the semester. For more information about tutoring availability and appointment scheduling, please review our Student FAQs.
- How are tutors hired?
Once an application is received, the applicant’s transcript is evaluated and the demand for tutoring in courses successfully completed (with an A or B) is assessed. An interview is then scheduled with the applicant (if warranted). Hiring decisions are based on the following:
- Student must meet minimum qualifications (see Peer Tutor job description)
- Student’s application must be supported by a letter of recommendation from a faculty member
- Student must demonstrate excellent communication and interpersonal skills during an interview
- Student must be qualified/knowledgeable to tutor courses for which there is sufficient demand for tutoring
- What type of training do tutors receive?
Tutors in training learn that their main priority is helping the student to become an independent learner, a critical thinker and problem solver. We stress that tutoring is NOT teaching, nor is it a substitute for participating in class, office hours, or studying outside of class.
Tutors hired prior to the start of the fall semester receive training via an intensive two day workshop. Those hired during a semester or between semesters complete online training modules via Blackboard.
Training topics include: defining the tutor’s role; key elements of an effective tutoring session; learning theory; the Socratic method; questioning and communication skills; incorporating study skills; growth mindset theory; making campus referrals; and awareness of differences in learning styles and abilities. In addition to the training they receive prior to working with students, tutors also receive ongoing training via meetings with their supervisor and monthly staff meetings.
- What happens during a typical tutoring session?
The tutor reviews the ASC policies and procedures with the student, which basically outlines the tutor’s responsibilities as well as the student’s responsibilities and serves to clarify expectations. The student can expect to be actively engaged in the learning process -- going through notes and the text, asking and answering questions, practicing problems, doing board work, creating flash cards, study guides, etc. Tutors have been trained to facilitate student learning by asking questions which require the student to think critically and by providing students with opportunities to demonstrate their understanding of the material. The tutor will document the student’s progress each week.
- Do you need additional tutors?
Students are welcome to apply to become a tutor at any time, but the bulk of hiring usually takes place prior to the start of each semester. All applications will be kept on file for future consideration. Additional tutors may be hired during the term based on tutoring demand and/or upon instructor request.
- What is the pay rate?
The starting wage for a peer tutor is $11.00 per hour. There are opportunities for wage increases based on the tutor’s level of experience and responsibilities assigned.
- How many hours are students required to work?
Most tutors work an average of 6-8 hours per week, with the minimum requirement being just 4 hours. The tutors determine when they would like to work and indicate their preference for where their sessions take place (i.e. in-person or online). We’re very flexible with students’ schedules.
- How do I recommend a student to become a tutor?
Faculty recommendations are critical to the process of staffing the ASC with qualified tutors. In fact, Students are more apt to apply when a faculty member encourages them to do so!
This position requires applicants to be responsible, academically successful, and able to communicate with students, faculty and staff members. Applicants should show the potential for developing strong leadership skills as well.
Tutor applications must be accompanied by a letter of recommendation, so you may be asked to provide a recommendation for a student who has applied. Your letter should include an evaluation of the applicant’s content knowledge, communication, interpersonal and leadership skills, as well as to what extent the applicant shows initiative, is self-motivated, organized and responsible.
