YSU RISE sponsors cultural competency workshops
The Youngstown State University Culture of Community initiative is sponsoring workshops on cultural competency on Saturday, Oct. 7, featuring Jesse Thompson, a recognized leader in the field of diversity and inclusion.
A community workshop will be held 10 a.m. at Flambeau’s Restaurant, 2308 Market St. A second workshop for YSU student leaders will be at 3 p.m. in the Ohio Room of Kilcawley Center on campus.
The workshops are sponsored by the Inclusion and Awareness Subcommittee of YSU’s Culture of Community RISE campaign. RISE stands for Respect and Well-Being, Inclusion and Awareness, Spirit and Tradition, and Excellence through Engagement.
Thompson, assistant dean at the University of Illinois Urbana Champagne, will facilitate the workshop. Topics to be covered include Making Inclusion Work, Serving Under Represented and First Generation Students, Strategies for Community Inclusion, and the Task of Community and University Leaders.
