Mathematics students score in top 8% of International Mathematical Modeling Competition
An undergraduate team in the YSU Department of Mathematics and Statistics won Meritorious awards in this year’s Mathematical Contest in Modeling. A distinction of Meritorious placed a YSU team in the top 8% of the more than 25,000 teams worldwide.
In all, YSU had seven teams and 21 students participate in this international mathematical modeling contest.
Mathematics majors, Bishal Lamichhane of Pokhara, Nepal; Subham Singh of Kathmandu, Nepal; and Aniket Singh of Birgunj, Nepal received the distinction of Meritorious (top 8%) for their submission entitled “The Music of Networks”.
Each year, the Consortium for Mathematics and Its Applications holds the Mathematical and Interdisciplinary Contest in Modeling. This year’s contest was held Feb. 4-9, 2021 and the results were recently published.
Teams of three students have 96 hours to develop a model, create a solution and submit a written report for one of several problems. This year, the problems addressed by YSU students were: “Fungi”, “Fighting Wildfires” or “The Influence of Music.”
Physics majors, Nishan Adhikari of Chitwan, Nepal; Abhinav Giri of Tikapur, Nepal; and Pradip Rimal of Kushma, Nepal received Honorable Mention for their paper titled “Fighting the Wildfire”.
“Bishal, Subham, and Aniket comprised the only team from the US to receive the Meritorious designation for their submission,” said Thomas Wakefield, chair of the Mathematics & Statistics Department. “We are very proud of our students and their work in this contest.”
