Countertenor is next in Pipino Performing Arts Series

Countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo, a headlining Metropolitan Opera soloist and Musical America’s 2019 Vocalist of the Year, virtually visits Youngstown State University Wednesday and Thursday, March 3 and 4 as part of the 2020-21 Donald P. Pipino Performing Arts Series.

Costanzo makes a virtual presentation at 7 p.m. March 3 and teaches a virtual master class at 4 p.m. March 4. Both events are free and open to the public. Access is via the Pipino Performing Arts website.

“Anthony Roth Costanzo continues our semester of internationally acclaimed performers who have joined us this season,” said Phyllis M. Paul, dean of the YSU Cliffe College of Creative Arts. “As a countertenor, he has been called ‘vocally brilliant and dramatically fearless’ by The New York Times), ‘otherworldly’ by The Wall Street Journal) and ‘a perfect musician’ by Le Monde. Once you’ve watched his presentations, I think you’ll agree he’s all those things and more.”

Costanzo began performing professionally at the age of 11 and has since appeared in opera, concert, recital, film and on Broadway. His debut album was nominated for a 2019 GRAMMY Award. He has appeared with many of the world’s leading opera houses, including the Metropolitan Opera, Canadian Opera Company, Glyndebourne Opera Festival, Teatro Real Madrid, Spoleto Festival USA, Glimmerglass Festival and Finnish National Opera. In concert he has sung with the New York Philharmonic, Berlin Philharmonic, London Symphony Orchestra and National Symphony Orchestra, among others.

He has performed at a wide-ranging variety of venues including Carnegie Hall, Versailles, The Kennedy Center, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Joe’s Pub, The Guggenheim and Madison Square Garden. He is a Grand Finals Winner of the Metropolitan Opera National Council auditions and won first prize in Placido Domingo’s Operalia Competition. He was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for his role in a Merchant Ivory film. He has begun working as a producer and curator in addition to a performer, creating shows for National Sawdust, Opera Philadelphia, the Philharmonia Baroque, Princeton University, WQXR, The State Theater in Salzburg, Master Voices and Kabuki-Za Tokyo.

The final 2020-21 Pipino Performing Arts Series guest is multi-instrumentalist and composer Tyshawn Sorey, a MacArthur Foundation Genius Fellow, on Wednesday, April 14.
