YSU Flute Festival features internationally-renowned performer
Internationally-renowned flutist Lorna McGhee is the featured guest at 26th annual Youngstown State University Flute Festival 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, March 30 on campus.
The event includes master classes and a recital by McGhee, principal flute of the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra. She has performed as guest principal with Chicago Symphony, Minnesota Orchestra, London Symphony, London Philharmonic, Academy of St-Martin-in-the-Fields and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe. Currently a member of the flute faculty at Carnegie Mellon University, McGhee has given master classes at universities, conservatoires and flute festivals worldwide, including Julliard School and the Royal Academy of Music. The recital will be at 2 p.m. in the Bliss Recital Hall on campus.
Kathryn Thomas Umble, associate professor of Flute at the Dana School of Music at YSU, will also lead a workshop at the festival. In addition to performing principal flute with the Warren Philharmonic Orchestra, Umble holds the piccolo position with the Youngstown Symphony Orchestra and has performed with the Erie Philharmonic, Opera Western Reserve, Fontainebleau Festival Orchestra, National Flute Association Gala Orchestra and Toledo Symphony Orchestra. She has presented recitals in Europe and throughout the United States, including venues such as Alice Tully Hall, New York, the Cleveland Institute of Music with members of the Cleveland Orchestra, and the Cleveland Art Museum.
