Astronomy / Physics Major

Have you always been a stargazer? Do you wonder what's out there...and why...and how? Well, good news—if you see your future through the lens of a telescope, we have the best major in the universe for you.

What You'll Study

Astronomy is considered a subfield of physics, and the coursework of a dual astronomy and physics degree reflects this with heavy emphasis on both disciplines as well as classes focused on important math concepts.

Astronomers observe and collect data used to explain relationships between stars and planets, as well as other phenomena occurring in the universe. In conjunction with other types of physicists, you might be called upon to solve problems connected with space flight navigation and satellite communications. Astronomers account for about seven percent of physicist jobs tracked by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Major

  • Physics and Astronomy Combined Major

Students with aspirations of a career path into astronomy take the combined major in Physics and Astronomy. (Like many other colleges that stress undergraduate education, YSU does't offer a separate degree in astronomy.)

One More Thing

Youngstown State is a smaller school with big connections. By the end of my second year here, I was working on undergraduate research and had secured an internship at NASA. Everyone in the Physics and Astronomy Department, faculty and students, is incredibly friendly and encourages one another to conquer their goals and reach for higher ones.”
