YSU marks Geography Week Nov. 14 to 16

The Department of Geography at Youngstown State University celebrates Geography Week Nov. 14 to 16 with a variety of activities:

Monday, Nov. 14, 6 to 8 p.m. Professional Geography Night in room 009 of the Phelps Building on campus. A panel of YSU Geography alumni will talk about their current positions and how their undergraduate geography degree led them into their career paths. Featured alumni include: Tom Buckler of the Ohio Department of Transportation; Grant Taylor of the Youngstown Neighborhood Development Corporation; Ed Davis of the Eastgate Council of Governments; Jeremy Mickler of Markwest Energy Partners; Cheri Donofrio of the Mahoning County Auditor's Office and Tad Herold of the Columbiana County Port Authority


Wednesday, Nov. 16. Open houses will be held at the YSU Department of Geography (Phelps Building, corner of Lincoln and Phelps, 1st floor) and Mahoning County GIS (21 W Boardman St.) in celebration of GIS Day. Stop by to tour the facilities.

The Geography Department will also offer an open source Geographic Information Science workshop. This workshop aims to help faculty achieve better results and appreciate the degree of geographic knowledge and tool use that should be implemented to make the most of their research. Hosts will tailor the workshop to participant interests and needs which can include topics ranging from business and marketing; historic preservation; Emergency management and response; natural resource assessments; story mapping citizen science; and community health. Although many more subject areas can be addressed. For instance, in the aftermath of Hurricane Mathew municipalities are modeling the hazard risk of flooding hog farms in the Carolinas, establishing distant decay models for relocation of sporting events at all levels, establishing response alternatives of long term recovery strategies and determining locations of various social pressures based on volume of displaced citizens. Geographic business models can be used to evaluate locational based surges in pricing of necessary goods and services.
