YSU to host Lake-to-River District Science Day
YSU will host Lake-to-River District Science Day 9 a.m. to noon, Saturday, March 16 in the Stambaugh Stadium Gymnasium on YSU’s campus.
Michael Serra, YSU associate professor of Chemical and Biological Sciences and director of District 15 for Lake-to-River District Science Day will lead the annual science fair for the district. District 15 includes students in grades five through 12 from schools in Ashtabula, Trumbull, Mahoning and Columbiana counties.
The science fair provides students with hands-on experience in science and the scientific method. Throughout the day, students must develop a hypothesis, design an experimental protocol and collect data. From there, they will analyze and interpret data to present their findings.
“They hone their critical thinking skills and develop their skills in scientific writing and public speaking” Serra said. “Ultimately, science fairs improve their success in STEM disciplines.”
If a district level science project is given a superior rating during District Science Day, students are then promoted to State Science Day.
