Desk Attendant

Position Description:

  • Provide customer service as the “face” of our department while
    working at their assigned location. This includes welcoming residents and
    guests as they enter the building, answering questions that arise, providing
    directions around campus, and generally being helpful.
  • Answer desk phones, provide callers with answers to any questions they
    may have, take messages as needed, and forward calls as needed.
  • Ensure the safety and security of the building by proactively identifying
    potential safety issues, addressing them directly as able, and calling for
    additional assistance as needed. Follow all emergency protocols as required.
  • Proactively maintain a clean and organized front desk area. Complete
    daily and weekly tasks as determined by the Desk Managers. Assess desk
    equipment as it is being checked in and out or used to ensure that it is in
    good working condition. Report broken or damaged equipment per protocol.
  • Sort mail and log packages. Check packages out to students.
  • Check guests in and out of the residence hall.
  • Communicate regularly and effectively with Desk Managers other Desk
    Attendants, Resident Assistants, professional staff and other support staff
    in the residence hall.
  • Other duties as assigned

Minimum Requirements:

  • Full-time student in good academic and conduct standing with Youngstown
    State University
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Interpersonal skills appropriate to a service-oriented environment
  • Ability to cooperate flexibly with fellow student employees and staff
  • Ability to learn basic information related to Housing & Residence Life
    and the University in general
  • General clerical skills including use of basic office equipment, filing,
    copying, sorting/distributing mail, etc.
  • Understanding of and ability to adhere to all regulations outlined in the
    Housing & Residence Life Desk Attendant manual, as well as general University
  • Commitment to confidentiality, organization, neatness, punctuality, and a
    positive attitude
