Youngstown State University is licensed by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and the Ohio Department of Health's (ODH) Division of Radiological Health to use radioactive materials and radiation producing devices in teaching and research laboratories across campus. Administratively, EHS manages all aspects of radiation safety in accordance with the NRC and ODH guidelines. It is the responsibility of the radiation safety officer to assure that the established policies for the safe handling, transport, and disposal of radioactive materials are followed by all users of radioisotopes, and that the radiation exposure to students and staff follow NRC's ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) concept.
The University's Radiation Safety Officer (RSO) reviews requests to use radioactive materials or radiation-producing devices, to determine if the facility and the procedure are in compliance with all aspects of the University's radiation licenses. This includes the surveying of laboratories where radioisotopes are used, the determination of yearly doses to students and staff, and the calibration of all instrumentation used in the radiation safety program.
