Batteries Disposal Request Form

Use the form below to request disposal of used batteries on campus.

  • Used battery containers can be dropped off at the Chemical Management Center (CMC), which can be accessed from Ward Beecher Hall, Room #202.
    • Container pick-up may be requested through this form, or by emailing cmc@ysu.edu; however, containers should be dropped-off at the CMC whenever possible.
  • Used Battery Containers must be labeled "USED BATTERIES". A label shall indicate waste collection start date, responsible department and building/room #.
    • All battery terminals (except standard alkaline - see description below) must be covered, using any non-conductive tape.

Electronics

"used batteries" does not include electronics!

YSU EHS or CHEMICAL MANAGEMENT CENTER (CMC) WILL NOT ACCEPT USED ELECTRONICS.

 
batteries must be removed from electronic devices/equipment, prior to USED BATTERY DISPOSAL!

Examples of Universal Waste batteries collected and recycled include:
  • Standard Alkaline: such as AA, AAA, C & D
  • 9V Alkaline: found in smoke detectors, portable instruments; 6V Alkaline (Lantern batteries)
  • Nickel cadmium (NiCad) - Rechargeable; found in cell phones, portable instruments, and laptop computers.
  • Nickel metal hydride (Ni-MH) - Rechargeable; found in cell phones, portable instruments, and laptop computers.
  • Lithium-ion (Li-ion, Lithium iron phosphate) - Rechargeable; found in mobile phones, AEDs, laptop computers.
  • Coin or "Button" batteries: found in watches, hearing aids, remotes & calculators; can consist of zinc, mercury or lithium.
  • Sealed lead acid: Most commonly found in car/automotive (12v) & lawn mower batteries (6v). Also used for battery backup applications, such as fridges/freezers and generators. - Contain lead & sulfuric acid.
all battery terminal ends (except types aa, aaa, c or d) must be taped prior to disposal!
Vinyl/Electrical, masking/painter's or duct tape is recommended. Please contact your Dept. Office/Administration or EHS if tape is needed.
e.g., "two 1-gal. containers", "1x 5 gal. pail", "one 2-ft. bin", weighing approx. 15 lbs." PLEASE BE SURE TO DESCRIBE ANY LARGE, BULKY OR HEAVY CONTAINERS (WEIGHING MORE THAN 20 LBS).

Standard container size is about 1-gallon pail or bucket.
