Disposal of Empty Chemical Containers


Designated Area:

All laboratories, both teaching and research.

Personal Protection:

Safety Goggles, Lab coat and appropriate gloves.

Training:

No formal training is necessary to complete this task. This SOP is included however in the department Safety Packet which is issued to all employees in the department and students involved in research.

Process:

Empty chemical containers (must have a cap) are to be taken to the Chemical Management Center.

Please send an email to cmc@ysu.edu to coordinate drop-off or pick-up of empty chemical bottles.

Do not discard in a trash can, drum, barrel, dumpster, etc.

EXCEPTION -You may use an empty chemical container to collect like-waste, but please send barcode information to the CMC.

  • Please note or take a photo of YSU CMC barcode characters and provide to CMC via email, campus mail or hand-delivery. Then, you may remove or deface the barcode label.
  • Prior to use, ensure the container & its previous contents are compatible witih the waste being added. Please consult your Faculty lab manager, the CMC, or EHS Dept.
  • The procedure for disposing of waste remains the same. Complete and attach a Chemical Waste label to the container and coordinate disposal with the CMC.
