Opportunities for Students

Advisors can be most helpful when they mentor students in ways that enhance their academic experiences in the Cliffe College of Creative Arts and Communication. This may involve encouraging students to take advantage of opportunities they may not have considered, such as special courses, campus activities, internships, study abroad, additional majors or minors, and graduate study. A sample of such opportunities includes the following

Study Abroad

Study abroad is a unique way to broaden your university education. By spending a semester, a year, or even a summer in another country, you can gain linguistic and intercultural skills that are essential for success in the globalized world of today. The unique challenges of living in another culture allow study abroad students to gain increased confidence and self-awareness. For more information, contact the International Programs Office.

Internships

Internships are a great way to explore careers and gain valuable work experience. Internships provide an opportunity to learn about industries and work environments as well as develop skills and beneficial relationships for future employment. Participating in internships will give students an edge when competing for full-time career opportunities. Internships for academic credit are part of several curriculums and are allowed by departments on a case-by-case basis. Academic advisors may assist students with finding internships, but the department chairperson must approve and award the credit. For more information schedule an appointment with your academic advisor or contact The Office of Career and Academic Advising.

Music Ensembles

All students from across campus are welcome to participate in University Chorus and Marching Band, not just music majors. For more information, contact the Dana School of Music.

Theatre and Dance

Opportunities exist for students to perform on stage, work in tech and design areas as well as participate in student film productions. Auditions, classes, and productions are regularly scheduled throughout the academic year. For more information, contact the Department of Theatre and Dance.

The Jambar

The Jambar is the independent student newspaper of Youngstown State University and is published twice weekly. Since being founded by Burke Lyden in 1931, The Jambar has won nine Associated Collegiate Press Honors. For more information, contact The Jambar.

Rookery Radio

Rookery Radio is Youngstown State University’s student-run internet radio station. Rookery is home to a variety of shows hosted by some of the student body with shows centering on music, sports, campus life, pop culture, and more. Rookery Radio is not restricted to specific majors. Anyone, regardless of major, with an interest in getting on the air for any given reason is more than welcome to have a show of their own. For more information, contact Rookery Radio.

Youngstown Press Club

The mission of the Youngstown Press Club is to unite media professionals in the Mahoning Valley through fellowship and education. The group plans to offer professional development opportunities to working and retired media members and YSU students. YSU students can join the Youngstown Press Club at no charge. For more information, contact the Youngstown Press Club.

Student Organizations

For just about every interest, a student organization is available on the YSU campus to meet your needs. We have an active community of more than 200 student organizations on campus, including art, communication, music, and theatre. We encourage students to get involved with one of the existing organizations. If you cannot find an organization that interests you, students are encouraged to start a club or organization. For more information, contact the Student Activities Office.
