Laptop computers are in hot demand by thieves throughout the country so please use a little common sense when bringing your laptop computer to the YSU campus. Here are a few tips to help you keep your laptop and not become prey to a sneaky criminal.
Safety Tips
Never leave your laptop computer unattended in any public location (i.e. classrooms, the library, study lounges, public benches, or in a locker).
-
Always securely lock offices or dorm rooms where the laptop is stored.
-
Never leave a laptop computer unattended and unsecured even for a short period of time.
-
If possible use a security device, such as steel cable locks, security plates or alarms, to secure your laptop computer. Your local computer store sells a number of security devices. Also, the laptop manufacturer may recommend and sell security devices on their own website.
-
Always contact the police in the event of a theft immediately.
-
Keep a copy of the serial number in a safe place that is easily accessible in the event of a theft.
-
Homeowners insurance may cover the loss of your laptop outside the home (contact your agent or insurance company for more information). People living in apartments should consider getting renters insurance.
-
We cannot guarantee that these prevention techniques will prevent the theft of a laptop computer but anything you do to make it harder for a thief to steal will help.
