Bio

Dr. Emily Herman McMillan (she/her) earned her Ph.D. in Counselor Education and Supervision from The Ohio State University and is licensed in Ohio as a School Counselor and a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC). She has nearly a decade of K12 school counseling experience and has worked in clinical mental health settings, including drug and alcohol centers and behavioral health hospitals. Dr. Herman McMillan has taught graduate courses in counseling methods, comprehensive school counseling program development, and school counseling internship. She also has co-teaching experience with school counseling practicum and multicultural courses. In addition, she has held various leadership positions at state and regional levels in the counseling profession, including Secretary of the Ohio Counseling Association and the North Central ACES Graduate Student Representative. In 2019, Dr. Herman McMillan was awarded The Ohio State University's Counseling Program's Doctoral School Counseling Student of the Year Award. Her research centers on social and emotional learning, specifically for educators, in addition to the intersection of SEL in diverse and marginalized populations. Dr. Herman McMillan teaches foundational courses, including Human Growth and Development, Counseling Theories, and Diagnosis for Children and Adolescents. Additionally, she provides instruction for Orientation and Ethics for School Counseling.

Recent examples of Dr. Herman McMillan’s research and scholarly activity. Dr. Herman McMillan has published articles in both counseling and education leadership journals, including the: Journal of Research on Leadership Education, Child and Youth Forum, Journal of School Counseling, and Clinical Supervisor. Further, she has presented at state, regional, and national levels with upcoming presentations focusing on social justice supervision and feminist pedagogy in counselor education.
