LGBTQ+ Alumni Chapter hosts discussion

The Youngstown State University LGBTQ+ Alumni Chapter hosts a Zoom discussion 7 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 2 focusing on the intersection of class and sexuality and what can be done locally to address issues facing LGBTQ+ students and others related to class.

The presenter is Tim Francisco, professor of English and director of the Center for Working Class Studies at YSU. He will discuss the impact of being LGBTQ+ and lower income, as well as the challenges facing working class LGBTQ+ people who identify with more than one underrepresented group. 

Francisco teaches early modern British Literature, Working Class and LGBTQ Literatures. His most recent book is an edited collection, Shakespeare and the 99%, which was cited as an important book in the field for 2019 by reviewers for the Los Angeles Review of Books and Studies in English Literature. He has published articles on early modern literature and queer theory, journalism pedagogy and American politics. A former journalist who has covered economics, politics and land use, Francisco hosts a weekly public affairs program on WYSU-FM.

Amanda Fehlbaum, associate professor of Sociology and an affiliate faculty member of the Women’s and Gender Studies program, has been published in Sexual Research & Social Policy journal as well as the books Sexual Deviance and Society and Young Adult Sexuality in the Digital Age. Her research interests include sex education, gender, sexuality, family and body studies. She is an advisor for YSUnity and the Planned Parenthood Generation Action student groups.
