Overview
Students at Youngstown State University may interact with the Office of Community Standards & Student Conduct in a few different ways. Below is more information to describe each role a student may play in our process.
Complainants
A complainant is a student who has chosen to file a report of an alleged violation of The Student Code of Conduct against another student. The complainant may make a report to their RA or Housing staff, to the YSU Police Department, to the Title IX Coordinator, directly to the Office of Community Standards & Student Conduct, etc.
Every report is investigated by one or more campus offices. The investigating office will determine if the charges have merit. If they do, then the case is forwarded to the Office of Community Standards & Student Conduct for further action. If the charges do not have merit, the initial report is kept on file with the Office of Community Standards & Student Conduct in the event that additional information becomes available at a later time.
Each complainant has rights under The Student Code of Conduct, see Article IV. Section 4. Hearing Procedures for more information.
Respondents
A respondent is a student who is being charged with an alleged violation of The Student Code of Conduct. The complaint against the respondent may be made by another student, a faculty or staff member, the YSU Police Department, a campus office, etc.
The respondent has rights under The Student Code of Conduct, see Article IV. Section 4. Hearing Procedures for more information. As a university, we ensure that our student conduct process respects the respondent and their due process rights.
Board Positions
Annually, students can apply for and be selected as members of the Student Conduct Board (SCB). Recruitment typically begins in April. Watch for a campus-wide e-mail toward the end of Spring semester with more information on the application process.
The Student Conduct Board consists of a variety of faculty, staff, and students from across the university who oversee all hearings for alleged violations of The Student Code of Conduct that have not been resolved through a Conduct Conference with a Conduct Officer. Members of the Student Conduct Board will work to provide learning experiences for those who participate in the student conduct process and will foster ethical development and personal accountability in our students. Members of the Student Conduct Board may also be called to fill board position for the Academic Grievance Subcommittee, which handles the processing of academic integrity cases.
To be considered for the Student Conduct Board, students:
- Must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 for undergraduate students and 3.0 for graduate students.
- Must not have an active student conduct record.
- Should be sophomore status or above.
- Must have a strong personal commitment to integrity, honesty, and civility.
- Must maintain confidentiality regarding all information related to a student conduct case.
