Steel Museum hosts closing reception for “Women at Work” exhibit

The Youngstown Historical Center of Industry and Labor will host its final presentation in the “Women at Work'' exhibit, 6 p.m, Friday, Nov. 10.

Director of American Studies, Professor of English and Faculty Director of Writing Curriculum Initiatives, Sherry Linkon will lead the lecture on “Reimagining Women's Work: Visions of the Future,” sponsored by the Ohio Humanities Council.

The discussion will examine the future of women’s work and the various factors including the evolving gig economy, the impact of remote work due to the pandemic and the potential influence of artificial intelligence. Additionally, challenges such as the growing need for child and elder care, along with changing educational patterns for both genders, further complicate the landscape.

Exploring historical context, drawing insight from experiences like deindustrialization in locations like Youngstown and considering perspectives from journalists, scholars and artists can aid in understanding the substantial challenges that working women may face in the coming decades.

Linkon previously held the position as co-director with the Center for Working-Class Studies at YSU from 1997 to 2012. Her most recent book, “The Half-Life of Deindustrialization: Working-Class Writing about Economic Restructuring”, delves into contemporary American working-class literature and media.

This event is free and open to the public; refreshments will be offered. Reservations, while optional, are preferred and can be made by calling 330-941-1314.
