Dana School of Music's Horn Workshop Jan. 7

The Dana School of Music at Youngstown State University hosts the sixth annual YSU Horn Workshop, noon to 5 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 7 in Bliss Recital Hall on the YSU campus.

The event is geared towards high school and college horn players and features clinicians Gunnery Sgt. Greta Richard and Staff Sgt. Cecilia Buettgen, both members of “The President’s Own” U.S. Marine Band.

The clinic is free and open to the public and musicians of all levels. Students should bring their own instruments but do not need to bring sheet music. The event includes a recital featuring the guest artists and Stacie Mickens, associate professor of Horn; question and answer session; master class and presentations with the guest clinicians; and a horn display by Motter's Music.

Free parking is available in the M32 Walnut Street surface parking lot located near the MVR, behind Bliss Hall. Reservations are not mandatory, but attendees are encouraged to confirm their attendance by emailing Mickens at srmickens@ysu.edu or visiting danahornsociety.com.

Richard, a French horn player, joined the Marine Band in June 2000. Richard earned a dual bachelor's degree in music education and performance in 1997 from Ithaca College in New York. In 2000, she earned a master's degree in music performance from Southern Methodist University in Dallas. Prior to joining "The President's Own," Richard performed with the Natal Philharmonic Orchestra in Durban, South Africa; the Dallas Wind Symphony; and the Dallas Symphony Orchestra. She performs with the Marine Band, Marine Chamber Orchestra, and Marine Chamber Ensembles at the White House, in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area, and across the country during the band's annual concert tour. In 2014, she performed David Lyon's Concerto for Horn and Strings with the Marine Chamber Orchestra.

Buettgen, a French horn player, joined the Marine Band in May 2013. She earned a bachelor's degree in 2008 from Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo and a master's degree in 2010 from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. Prior to joining the Marine Band, Buettgen was the acting principal horn of the Beijing National Opera House in China and performed with the Columbus and Lima Symphony Orchestras in Ohio, Kentucky Symphony Orchestra in Newport, the Richmond Symphony Orchestra in Indiana, and the Southwest Michigan Symphony Orchestra in St. Joseph. She performs with the Marine Band, Marine Chamber Orchestra, and Marine Chamber Ensembles at the White House, in the Washington, D.C., metropolitan area, and across the country during the band's annual concert tour.
