Main corridors into and around campus will get major upgrades as part of four campus improvement projects that are expected to be finished by the start of Fall semester 2016. Among the projects are major upgrades to Wick Avenue, including new pavement, buried utility lines and improved lighting. “Next year, when you come in to campus to begin the school year, you’re going to see an unbelievable esplanade, if you will, that we hope brings Wick Avenue back to the grandeur that Wick Avenue had historically,” President Jim Tressel said. The John S. and Doris M. Andrews Trust has donated $250,000 to YSU to help fund upgraded lighting for the project. “We are happy to be a part of a project that will help enhance this important, historic thoroughfare through the YSU campus and into downtown Youngstown,” said Paul Williams, Andrews Trust trustee. The Lincoln Avenue corridor, another core crossroad of the university, will also undergo improvements, including resurfacing, new sidewalks and lighting. The Wick and Lincoln projects are under the auspices of the city of Youngstown. In addition, new green spaces are being created across from Jones Hall on Lincoln Avenue and also next to Sweeney Hall near Elm Street, including a new sand volleyball court. The Lincoln and Wick projects are scheduled to start in early spring 2016 and to be completed by the start of Fall semester 2016. The work will result in adjustments in vehicular and pedestrian traffic along both streets, including possible closures. The city is working with the university to develop detailed traffic detours.
