Job Description:

Job Title: Assistant Conduct Officer Graduate Assistantship, Office of Student Conduct

The Office of Student Conduct at Youngstown State University has responsibility for:

  • Educating the campus community about The Student Code of Conduct, including student conduct standards (policies) and student conduct procedures;
  • Investigating alleged violations of The Student Code of Conduct;
  • Adjudicating cases of alleged violations of The Student Code of Conduct through both informal and formal university proceedings;
  • Ensuring that students’ due process rights are upheld in all university student conduct proceedings, which includes oversight of all Student Conduct Board hearings and involvement in some Academic Grievance Subcommittee hearings for academic integrity violations;
  • Coordinating efforts with the university Title IX Coordinator with regards to alleged violations of the university Sexual Misconduct Policy;
  • Coordinating efforts with the university police department for cases that cross multiple jurisdictions;
  • Creation and coordination of a variety of conduct sanctions that meet the educational needs of students who are participating in the student conduct process;
  • Management of the university conduct database (Judicial Action/Pave Systems);
  • Collection and assessment of data pertaining to university student conduct.

 

Under the supervision of the Associate Director for Student Conduct, the Assistant Conduct Officer will assist with all of the core tasks of the Office of Student Conduct, as outlined above. This includes:

  • Review of student conduct reports received in the office and determination of proper procedures for pursuing each report;
  • Conducting conduct conferences with students alleged to have violated The Student Code of Conduct;
  • Investigation into alleged violations of The Student Code of Conduct, including holding interviews with potential witnesses, reviewing video footage, audio recordings, review of written records, etc.;
  • Acting as an advocate for all students, ensuring that they are knowledgeable about their rights;
  • In cases where a complainant files a report, working with them to determine their options and next steps;
  • Collaboration with various campus offices to develop programs, workshops, and other educational interventions to serve as conduct sanctions;
  • Management of a case load, including ensuring that cases are addressed in a timely and appropriate manner, and the subsequent sanctions are completed in a timely and appropriate manner.

 

Applicant qualifications:

  • Receipt of a Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited institution and full-time enrollment in a graduate program at Youngstown State University. Candidates pursuing degrees in Student Affairs and College Counseling, Education, Counseling, or related fields preferred.
  • Experience with conflict mediation, student conduct case adjudication, program planning, workshop implementation, student counseling, or other related tasks is strongly preferred.
  • The ability to think critically about information that is presented in a case to determine fact; the ability to weigh various accounts or pieces of information presented in a case; the ability to balance a need for consistency with the individual needs and situation of each student.
  • A strong personal commitment to integrity; the ability to maintain confidentiality and discretion.
  • An understanding of the concepts of multiculturalism, power, and privilege, and the way in which a student’s identity or background may affect their campus experience. Experience working with diverse populations, including ethnically diverse individuals, students with disabilities, nontraditional students, international students, and LGBTQ+ students. The successful candidate is expected to assist in advancing the department’s commitment to equity and inclusion.

 

Position details:

  • Position will begin Monday, August 21, 2017 and will end Friday, May 5, 2018, excluding university breaks. The Assistant Conduct Officer is expected to work an average of 20 hours per week. 
  • Compensation includes a free on-campus apartment and stipend of $7,500 ($3,750/semester, $12.00/hr).
