Saxophone & Jazz Day

The Dana School of Music invites high school jazz musicians (on all instruments), saxophone students, music educators, college students and others to bring your horns and join us for a Combined Jazz Day and Saxophone Summit on Saturday, March 19, 2022 in YSU's Bliss Hall from 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM. Jazz clinics and concerts will feature celebrated New York tenor saxophonist and alumnus Ralph Lalama. He has been a mainstay in the world-renowned Village Vanguard Jazz Orchestra for many years and is a leading New York City jazz educator. Ralph has performed with the biggest names in jazz throughout his impressive career including Woody Herman, Buddy Rich, the Mel Lewis Orchestra, and the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra. Lalama is a three-time Grammy winner through his work in the Joe Lovano Nonet and the Vanguard Jazz Orchestra. He has released nine CDs as a leader and is on more than sixty recordings as a sideman. Classical performances and masterclasses will be presented by Misato Hanawa from Japan, one of that country's leading young classical saxophone artists. A brilliant performer, this is a rare opportunity to hear her and observe her teaching in the US. Praised for her brilliance and maturity (The Guardian) Misato Hanawa has been invited to give recitals and to participate in festivals in the most prestigious venues all over the world such as the Tokyo Opera City, Ariel Opera House, and Mito Art Tower. She is also regularly invited to master classes. Misato has performed with numerous orchestras including the Israel Soloist Orchestra, Japan Century Orchestra, and the Wien Chamber Orchestra. She is the winner of several prestigious international competitions, including the International Music Competition Leopold Bellan, World Music Competition, International Music competition U.F.A.M., International North Music Competition. Also performing is Big Blitz, a nationally known trio (two saxophones, synths and drums) that performs high energy dance and groove-based music made up of YSU students Lucas Ciesielski, Mason Ciesielski and Nick Grabigel. Big Blitz is a prominent force on the festival touring and social media scene. Dr. James Umble will also perform and oversee the day. He is YSU professor of saxophone, nationally recognized saxophone teacher, soloist, chamber musician and author. A breakout session on jazz rhythm section playing will be presented by outstanding YSU Jazz Faculty including Kent Engelhardt (saxophone and piano), and YSU jazz drummer and percussion faculty Glenn Schaft. The event is free and open, but advance registration at the link is requested.
