Artist Statement: This show explores the creative power that can be found in domestic spaces and the everyday materials of our lives. I’m interested in the transformation of mundane materials into something new, using the visual language of painting & abstraction. In this show, you will see materials like my family’s discarded pizza box lids, vintage handkerchiefs, furniture, IKEA curtains, yarn, and other household materials. By making these material choices, I ask myself, and the viewer, to reconsider what can be seen as a painting. Why can’t our objects, furniture, clothing, and even our discarded pizza lids become something else? Why can’t a loveseat be a painting? Through this work, I explore the relationship between domestic materials and abstraction. These paintings push the boundaries of what a painting can be while infusing everyday objects with joy, playfulness, and all the messy, raw layers of domestic life. I hope you feel at home on the loveseat and enjoy a moment of revelry and blurring of boundaries between home and art gallery.
