Aging Studies

The Aging Studies Graduate certificate is one of Youngstown State University's newest degree programs. With a solid interdisciplinary focus on social epidemiology and aging, the program differs from the few others of its kind in the state, and it joins only a small number of others in the country.

What You'll Study

The Aging Studies Graduate certificate gives you an interdisciplinary approach to learning social epidemiology and aging through a blend psychology, political science, social work and human ecology coursework.

You'll study the health of older adults, including risk factors of disease that affect the health of the aging population. You'll also examine the relationship between demographic factors, such as gender, race, SES, and health and illness factors within the aging community.

The program is ideal for any professional currently working in aging- and health-related areas or for recent graduates of undergraduate programs such as:

  • Gerontology
  • Sociology
  • Nursing and nursing home administration
  • Health professions and public health
  • Human ecology
  • Biology
  • Social work

Aging Studies Graduate Certificate

  • Program Overview

The Graduate certificate in Gerontology and Health is a post-baccalaureate program designed for those already working with the aging population and for those who wish to become familiar with the field. The US population age 65 and over is projected to grow from 47.8 million in 2015 to 65.9 million in 2025: a 38% increase (US Census, 2014). Aging issues will affect all aspects of social, political, health and economic forces for years to come.

The curriculum is designed to form an interdisciplinary perspective of gerontology and focuses on epidemiology and health. This program provides students with advanced education in issues facing older adults and their families and will provide in depth knowledge of policies impacting aging. The program consists of 18 semester hours and may be completed on a full-time or part-time basis.
