Pipino Performing Arts Series

Sponsored by Chris and Ed Muransky, YSU’s Donald P. Pipino Performing Arts Series features diverse international artists whose astounding performances inspire audience members of all ages. Artists such as Dance Theatre of Harlem, Huber Marionettes, Cuarteto Latinoamericano, Karim Sulayman, Du Yun, René Izquierdo, Ailey II, Tysahwn Sorey, American Brass Quintet, and the Harlem Quartet have graced stages throughout our community. The Pipino Series brings to Youngstown the types of cultural opportunities usually found only in large metropolitan areas. YSU believes that the arts are vital to the University, our community, and region, and Cliffe College of Creative Arts is proud to host the Donald P. Pipino Performing Arts Series. We invite you to join us for as many of our exceptional performances as possible.

Jazz at Lincoln Center PRESENTSSing and Swing

For over three decades, Jazz at Lincoln Center, under the direction of Wynton Marsalis, has been a leading advocate for jazz, culture, and arts education globally. Jazz at Lincoln Center PRESENTS Sing and Swing celebrates the Great American Songbookin all of its playful—and sophisticated—glory, brought to life by two of this generation’s brightest stars. Each armed with prodigious trumpet talent and vocal charm, Bria Skonberg and Benny Benack III will relive and re-imagine some of the classic partners in jazz and popular song, including Ella Fitzgerald, Judy Garland and Bing Crosby, and Dean Martin and Peggy Lee. Featuring songs by Gershwin, Ellington, Cole Porter, Irving Berlin, and many more, and joined by a who’s who of New York all-stars, this is an “unforgettable” evening of singin’ and swingin’ with Bria and Benny.

Cavani String Quartet

Described by the Washington Postas “completely engrossing, powerful and elegant,” the Cavani Quartet’s artistic excellence, generous spirit, and fervent ambassadorship for great music have placed them among America’s greatest string quartets. The quartet’s more than thirty-year legacy has garnered impressive recognition, including The Naumburg Award, Ohio Governors Award for the Arts, Musical America Magazine’s Young Artists of the Year, ASCAP Award for Adventurous Programming, two-time winner of The Guarneri Quartet Award Artistic Excellence, and recipients of more than ten Chamber Music America Residency Partnership Grants.

My Sister’s Keeper

In 2018, a team of performing scholars conceived and developed the "My Sister's Keeper" project to explore African American women composers through the lens of African American women musicians. Drs. Minnita Daniel Cox, Alexis Davis-Hazell, Marcia Porter, and Rosalyn Wright Floyd have presented for national audiences via the National Association of Teachers of Singing and the National Opera Association and are pleased to present the project's next chapter.

Quey Percussion Duo

For nearly 20 years, Quey [“Kway”] Percussion Duo has dazzled audiences worldwide with their unmistakable style that blends traditions of contemporary, cross-cultural, classical, and popular music to create colorful sound worlds.
