Tips for the 2024-2025 FAFSA Form
after you submit your fafsa
YSU plans to issue financial aid offers as soon as FAFSA information is received by late April.
- Once FAFSA information is released to the schools, students will be e-mailed, or mailed if no e-mail was provided on the FAFSA, a FAFSA Submission Summary. The FAFSA Submission Summary will provide you an overview of the information you provided on the FAFSA with exception of Federal Tax Information (FTI) transferred via the FUTURE Act Direct Data Exchange. Make sure to review the FAFSA Submission Summary for any errors or misinformation. If you find any errors, please contact our office for assistance with correcting the information.
Priority Deadlines
The priority deadline for the 2024-2025 FAFSA submission is February 1 for new students and February 15 for continuing students.
The office is aware priority deadlines are quickly approaching. These deadlines are priority deadlines but not absolute deadlines. It is in your best interest to submit these applications as soon as possible to ensure early consideration.
Key Changes with the 2024-2025 FAFSA
- Student Aid Index (SAI). The Expected Family Contribution number, or more commonly known as the EFC, will be replaced by the Student Aid Index (SAI). Like the EFC, the SAI will be used to determine a student’s federal aid eligibility and calculate a student’s financial need. In addition to the name change, new federal methodology will be used to calculate the SAI. Since the SAI calculation differs from the EFC calculation, federal aid a student was previously eligible for may be affected. Students and families can use our Financial Aid Estimator, once available, to estimate their SAI and federal aid.
- Parent of Record. In the situation where a dependent student has biological parents that are separated or divorced, historically, the parent of record on the FAFSA was the parent who provided more than 50% of the student’s support (i.e. the parent the student lived with more in the last 12 months). Effective for the 2024-2025 FAFSA, the parent of record on the FAFSA is the parent who provides the greater portion of the student’s financial support regardless if the student resides with the parent. If that parent is remarried, the parent’s spouse (stepparent) information and FA-DDX consent is also required to be included on the FAFSA.
- Child Support Received. Child support received by independent student or parent will no longer be considered untaxed income but rather will be reported as an asset.
- Number in Household in College. The number in household in college reported on the FAFSA will not be included in the calculation of the Student Aid Index and will not be a determining factor of the type of federal/state aid a student can receive.
- Small Business and Family Farm Net Worth. The net worth of a family business (regardless of number of employees) and family farm (regardless if family resides on the farm) must be reported as an asset on the FAFSA.
