Course Overrides

Overrides are a faculty/staff solution that allows a student to by-pass a registration add error when using the Penguin Portal registration system. 

General Guidelines

Faculty/staff who have been granted advisement rights, may enter student overrides in internet native banner (SFASRPO). In SFASRPO, a permit/override may be enter under a specific student record by CRN and/or Subject/Course Number.  The Office of the Registrar is aware that placing overrides can be cumbersome and confusing for anyone advising students.  Below is a list of the available overrides, the banner codes and additional information that will help faculty and staff use them accurately.

Capacity (7CAPACITY)

  • Student Registration Error Message:  Closed Section CRN 12345 BIOL 1234
  • This override is CRN specific.  It should only be used in extreme circumstances as the use of this override trumps the course wait list process.
  • Who can resolve this error?  Course Department


Class (3CLASS)

  • Student Registration Error Message:  Class Restriction.
  • The term "class" refers to a student's class rank (i.e., sophomore).  This override is CRN specific; when you place the permit on SFASRPO, you must enter the CRN.
  • Who can resolve this error?  Course Department


College (5COLLEGE)

  • ​Student Registration Error Message:  College Restriction
  • The term "college" refers to the university's ability to restric a section or entire course to only those with majors within the academic college.  This override is CRN specific, unless every section of the course is reserved for a specific academic college.
  • Who can resolve this error?  Course Department


Co-Requisite (8CO-REQ)

  • Student Registration Error Message:  Corequisite (BIOL 1234L) required
  • Some courses have an additional course that must be taken during the same semester unless the department is able to waive the corequisite requirement.  This override is CRN specific; when you place the permit on SFASRPO, you must enter the CRN. 
  • Who can resolve this error?  Course Department or Academic Advisor


Field of Study (FOS)

  • Student Registration Error Message:  Field of Study Restriction CRN 12345 BIOL 1234
  • The term "field of study" refers to a track within the major (i.e., sports broadcasting within telecommunications). This override is CRN specific, unless every section of a course is reserved for a specific field of study. 
  • Who can resolve this error?  Course Department


Pre-Requisite  (2PRE-REQ)

  • Student Registration Error Message:  Prerequisite or test score error.
  • This override is not CRN specific so that a a student can select any section of the course. 
  • Who can resolve this error?  Course Department


Program (4PROGRAM)

  • Student Registration Error Message:  Program Restriction.
  • The term "program" refers to the student's academic major (i.e., nursing).  This override is CRN specific, unless every section of the course is reserved for a specific program. 
  • Who can resolve this error?  Course Department


Special Approval (1SP APPRVL)

  • Student Registration Error Message:  Special Approval Required.
  • If a course is marked for special approval, every student will need this override to be able to self-register for the course.  This override is also CRN specific; when you place the permit on SFASRPO, you must enter the CRN.
  • Who can resolve this error?  Course Department


Student Attribute (10ATTRIB)

  • ​Student Registration Error Message:  Student Attribute Restriction.
  • The term "attribute" refers to a code used for specific populations of students (i.e., veterans).  This override is CRN specific, unless every section of a course is reserved for a specific attribute. 
  • Who can resolve this error?  Course Department


Time Conflict (11TIME)

  • Student Registration Error Message:  Time Conflict with CRN 12345 BIOL 1234 and CRN  15678 CHEM 1234
  • While students are permitted to take classes that conflict as it is the student's responsibility to make arrangements with instructors, the system is set to prevent a student from completing this type of registration without intervention.  This override is CRN specific. 
  • Who can resolve this error?  Course Department, Academic Advisor, or Student One Stop


PLEASE NOTE:  There is not an option to override a "Level Restriction" error.
