Leave Without Pay During the Initial Probationary Period

Leave without pay (LWOP) may be available to a new hire eligible employee who has not accrued or is unable to use accrued leave balances but have scheduled absences.  Leave request(s) must be submitted one (1) month in advance of the beginning of the leave or at the earliest feasible time. 

All available paid leaves (i.e sick, personal from sick) must be exhausted prior to the LWOP commencing.   

When to Submit a Request for Leave

An eligible employee will be required to provide the Chief Human Resource Officer, or their designee written notification.  The bargaining unit member must notify the department head one (1) week in advance of scheduled visits. An employee must complete the New Hire Request for UNPAID Leave form and submit this form to the benefits secure upload. The only exception will be when unforeseen circumstances prevent the employee from providing the required notice. Request must be submitted as soon as reasonably possible when the employee becomes aware of the need.  

The New Hire Request for Unpaid Leave form must be completed and submitted to the benefits secure upload to determine and confirm eligibility. 

Accrued Leave

Employees must exhaust their accrued leaves (sick leave, personal from sick) before being placed in an unpaid leave status.
