Upcoming Workshops & Events

New Faculty Academy

Each month, we invite a campus partner to come and talk about a topic of interest to new faculty followed by lunch and informal discussion. Last fall, we had sessions on honors contracts, universal design for learning, helping students with non-academic challenges, and designing good prompts. It is also a great opportunity to ask questions or brainstorm challenges with ITL staff and/or your new faculty colleagues. The meetings will held in Jones 3049 on the following days:

  • Monday, April 15, 12:30-2PM—Community Engagement
  • Monday, May 13, 4-6PM—Year-End Celebration at Yosteria

ITL Spring Podcast Club

Thursday, April 11th, 1PM

This spring we will be listening to and discussing episodes of the "Lecture Breakers" with Barbi Honeycutt. Participants will listen to podcast episodes and then meet to discuss.  Club members can participate in as many or few sessions as your schedule allows. The last meeting will be April 11th at 1 PM in Jones 3049. We can accommodate virtual participants if your schedule does not allow in-person attendance.

"Lecture Breakers," with Barbi Honeycutt, describes itself as "the place where educators share innovative teaching strategies to help you break up your lecture, energize your classroom, increase student engagement, and improve learning." Nearly 150 free episodes highlight specific techniques and strategies; recent examples include creative use of audio, using infographics, enhancing critical thinking, engaging virtual environments, and active learning in asynchronous courses. Our podcast group will select episodes of interest and meet a few times during the semester to discuss them.

Generative AI: Professional Learning Community (PLC)

The Generative AI: Professional Learning Community (PLC) will be hosted in Jones 3049 or virtually via Webex. Light refreshments will be provided. The final PLC will be held on:

  • Session 3 Date: Thursday, April 18, 3-4PM

Session 3: How can I teach and evaluate writing skills in a world with AI?

Have you seen what free chatbots can do with traditional assignment writing prompts? Are AI-text detection tools effective? (not really). If written text is the predominant medium through which student learning is assessed in your discipline, how can you respond? Optional preparatory readings on ways expert educators in these fields are adapting will enable you to hit the ground running for this session. Together, we’ll examine a toolkit of potential assignment adaptations, and each participant can begin adapting or transforming one key assignment or learning assessment in collaboration with peers. Members of Cyberlearning’s instructional design team and guides from the ITL will be on hand to help you get started.
