Acquisition of Refrigerants

Refrigerants are regulated under the Clean Air Act and can only be purchased by organizations that employ technicians certified in either EPA sections 608, 609 or both. These refrigerants are regulated substances and shall be purchased by the Chemical Management Center. They will be stored at the CMC or temporarily in a secured satellite area under the supervision of an EPA certified technician. They are usually purchased in 30 lb. bottles that can be dispensed in ounces using only EPA certified equipment. When a technician needs a refrigerant, he/she should do the following:

  1. Call (ext. 3703) or come to the Chemical Management Center.
  2. Bring or fill out an appropriate CMC order form containing:
    1. Type of refrigerant needed
    2. User department
    3. Departmental account number for back-charging
    4. Date of job to be performed
    5. Signature of technician
  3. Take a refrigerant bottle with them to complete job and return.
  4. Complete form by filling out amount in ounces used on the job.
  5. User department will be back-charged for amount of refrigerant used on job.
