Bio

I am an observational astronomer. I observe celestial objects with telescopes in order to answer fundamental questions of how planets, stars, and galaxies are formed and change over time. As a professor at Youngstown State University (YSU), I teach astronomy to non-science majors in order to bring them the excitement of modern science. I train students who are considering professional careers in astronomy. I also perform service to the university, to the professional field of astronomy, and to the general public as a whole.

Research Interests

My scholarly activities include observational studies of galaxies, galaxy clusters, galaxy groups, extragalactic planetary nebulae, high redshift galaxies, stars that vary in brightness, and extra-solar planets.

As is customary in astronomy, my research is done in collaboration with other astronomers. In my case, these include astronomers at Penn State, Case Western Reserve, Rutgers, Yale, Vanderbilt, Lowell Observatory, and the National Optical Astronomical Observatories (NOAO; a federally-funded astronomical observatory). I also collaborate with scientists in other countries, including Italy, Germany, and Chile and I also collaborate closely with my colleague at YSU, Dr. Patrick Durrell.

Teaching Interests

I am interested in active learning techniques in STEM classes, using learner-centered education. New techniques such as inquiry-based education and collaborative learning methods have been shown to improve student learning substantially in experiments involving thousands of students These techniques do not mean small classes or an excessive amount of preparation time; they mean adapting teaching styles to create the best environment for student learning.

I have been interested in applying these techniques to the classroom, focusing on ongoing improvement and documentation of effectiveness. Whenever possible, I have collaborated with the experts in astronomy and physics education research to improve my classes and to share what I have learned in applying these new methods.
