Ms. Carla Mattiussi

Carla offers an unwavering passion for the integration of career and academic advising at the first-year student level. Her focus over thirteen years includes career counseling, core-competency development, resume and cover letter writing, and mock interviewing. Carla is a certified MBTI Practitioner (2017) and is expected complete master level training in 2019. During exploratory advising appointments with students seeking a major she integrates aspects of personality assessments, including MBTI & Strong Interest Inventory, while focusing on long-term academic and career planning. Carla's personal advising philosophy incorporates a collaborative, transformational counseling style that emphasizes individual empowerment. She works with most majors on campus, gives in-class presentations for the first-year experience career module for YSU, and helps advise incoming exploratory majors during orientation.  

Committed to advancing her background in higher education, and specifically within the area of student development, Carla completed a post-master’s Education Specialist in Higher Education Administration (Ed.S) degree from Kent State University (2017). She holds a Graduate Certificate in International Higher Education from Kent State University (2011), Master of Arts degree in Education from Walsh University (2007), and Bachelor of Arts degree in Communication from the University of Dayton (1994). Areas of qualitative research interests include faculty-led global learning, exploratory career advising, and holistic student development. Prior to coming to Youngstown State University in 2016, she oversaw and helped develop a satellite campus for first-generation students as Site Director at Walsh University-Canfield, worked for the summer Upward Bound program at Kent State University, and has experience working with transfer students while at the University of Akron. She is also an adjunct faculty member in the Honors College and works closely with developing the career readiness presentations each semester.

She enjoys swimming, writing, upcycling, card making, hiking, and acrylic painting. She is dedicated to providing a holistic student-centered experience with an emphasis on integrating academic, career, social, and professional development goal setting.
