Additional Drupal Training Items

  •  Label links according to title of web page or document that they are pointing to.  “Click here” or “see this document” are not descriptive enough for screen readers.  This also provides consistency with links pointing to same web page or document on your website.  Also, linking to typed out URLs creates redundancy for screen readers since it reads the text then the actual URL link (i.e., essentially repeating same string of characters twice).  Create link from title (i.e., words on page).

  •  Either use graphics software (i.e., Photoshop, etc.) or image tool in Drupal in order to resize image.  In graphics software make sure sure resolution is set to 72 dpi.  Images set for 300 dpi are primarily for print environment and take longer to download on websites. Note: in Drupal, upload image, then resize (i.e., leaving box checked for “Create a new image”). Delete larger image, if you do not need (i.e., see instructions below for removing image and document files).

  •   Add page headings in a sequential order starting with Heading 2 (i.e., note: page title is a Heading 1). If employing a nested heading under Heading 2, use Heading 3.
  •   Add alt text description for images (i.e., entering text in a sequential order for images with words on them - diagrams, charts, etc.)
  •   Add caption, summary, and row headers for tables using pop-up dialogue box.  Note: a summary describe table data or how it is organized without the details.
  •   Use Bold or Italics to emphasize wording instead of underlines.
  •   Convert Word or PDF documents to web page format, if possible.  Alternatively, copy text from document into web page, and place Printable Version graphic on page. SEE VISUAL Then link graphic to document (i.e., useful for newsletters, brochures, etc.).  Note: all text in document needs to be present on web page (i.e., embedded text in graphics, etc.).

  •   Place an asterisk* after link to a document (e.g., PDF, Word doc, Excel, or PowerPoint) is referenced by the link to Required Document Plugins found in the site footer.  This page provides links to download the necessary plugin.

  •   Click on “Hello your username” in upper right hand corner of screen (i.e., left of the “Log out” link).
  •   Select “File browser” link
  •   For images: click on images folder - For documents: click on documents folder (i.e., note: if folder is not displayed - click on root directory folder).
  •   Note: your department folder will be displayed in left pane (i.e., select if images or documents are not displayed).
  •   Click on image or document - then select the “X Delete” to remove.
