ALEKS Online Proctor Testing Instructions

Taking the ALEKS Math Placement Test with an online proctor

To meet the needs of our students and to follow the State of Ohio’s policy on Staying Home, Youngstown State University would like to offer you the flexibility to take the ALEKS Math Placement Test in the convenience of your own home. The following instructions will help you prepare to take the exam. Please read through the directions carefully.

To take the ALEKS Placement Test at home you must agree to the following:

  1. You must turn off and put away your phone.
  2. No personal calculators are permitted.
  3. No outside assistance is allowed – you should find a quiet space to work alone.
  4. You are required to download Respondus lockdown browser prior to launching the exam. (Download browser)
  5. You must have a camera on your computer so you can use the Respondus Monitor. The monitor will record your exam attempt and flag suspicious behavior for our review. Should an exam be flagged suspicious, an in-person proctored assessment will be required.
    1. There is a $5.00 fee to use Respondus Monitor.  If you cannot afford the $5.00 please reach contact staff and we will proctor your exam via virtual meeting software called Webex.
  6. Show photo identification at the start of the exam.
  7. You are permitted to use 3 pieces of scratch paper and a pencil/pen.

Taking the ALEKS Math Placement Test using the online proctor will require access to a Windows computer, a MAC, or an IPAD. Unfortunately, Chromebooks or other tablets are not compatible with the required software.

Please email testing@ysu.edu if you are unable to meet the requirements outlined above.
