The Paula and Anthony Rich Center for Autism at Youngstown State University is making a global impact, spreading autism awareness to over 10,000 viewers in 86 different countries across six continents.  The Rich Center spreads awareness through its twelve (12) Video Learning Modules, which were developed with the goal of studying and treating autism via distance learning technology and programs.The twelve (12) Video Learning Modules consist of video lectures, guest lecturers, video conferences, criterion-based quizzes, printable .pdf documents, video modeling, and online mentoring.  The subject matter of the twelve (12) Modules ranges from basic information about autism, autism spectrum disorders, and Asperger’s Syndrome; to more specific advice and support for teachers, parents, and caregivers of children with autism.  The most popular module is “Incidental Teaching,” which provides information about teaching within the field of behavior analysis.

The Learning Module sequence offers useful training for medical professionals, general education teachers, school psychologists, speech professionals, occupational therapists, paraprofessionals, teacher assistants and aides, parents, and other students.  Participants who completed the Learning Module sequence have proven able to more effectively work with children diagnosed with autism.

In April of 2008, the United States Department of Education awarded the Rich Center for Autism a grant for $421,505 to create programs that study and treat autism using distance learning technologies.  The grant-funded project to develop the Learning Modules began in June 2008 and concluded in September 2009.
