Chemistry Major

Earn your chemistry degree from a program that offers exceptional hands-on research experiences for students and boasts new facilities that put YSU’s material analysis capabilities among the best in the country.

What You'll Study

Whether you're thinking about a future in medicine, pharmacy, research or education, the Chemistry program at Youngstown State University gives you the opportunity to make your degree work for you.

In addition to choosing your study track, you'll get hands-on experience with equipment as early as freshman year — an advantage that upperclassmen usually only anticipate. The new X-Ray Diffraction Lab is second to none in Ohio, and several other chemistry facilities allow you to work alongside professors on research.

At least six undergraduates in the program can apply for positions as student researchers through a grant from the National Science Foundation. Research opportunities like these, along with your education, are elements for success during your college career and into the future.

Major

Master of Science in Chemistry available for this major.

We offer both the Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Arts degrees in Chemistry and the Bachelor of Science degree in Biochemistry.

If you plan to make a career in chemistry or research, the recommended path is the BS degree, which meets the standards of the American Chemical Society. Our BA better suits students looking for a career in business, education, medicine, dentistry or pharmacy.

  • Pre-Professional Tracks

With these tracks, you'll work closely with a faculty member to make sure you fulfill all requirements for entrance into one of the following professional fields:

    • Dentistry
    • Medicine
    • Optometry
    • Pharmacy
    • Veterinary

  • Combined BS/MS Program

This is a five-year program that gives you the opportunity to start graduate studies after an accelerated bachelor's program. You will receive your Bachelor of Science in Chemistry after three years and continue on to earn your Master of Science in Chemistry in two years. If you're interested in the combined program, you can submit an application to the Department of Chemistry during your senior year in high school.
