The UPside Enrollment is taking a turn for the better, declining 0.7 percent this Fall after significant decreases in each of the previous four years. “We are seeing some very positive numbers in some important categories,” said Gary Swegan, associate vice president for Enrollment Planning and Management. The preliminary numbers became official on the 15th day of the Fall semester. The number of freshmen is up 247 from last year (+13.5 percent); freshmen, transfer, graduate and dual enrollment students up 601 students (+20 percent); freshman-to-sophomore retention rate up, from 67.2 percent to 73.2 percent; freshman all-time highs in ACT scores (21.19) and high school GPA (3.14). Also, the class includes more out-of-state students (+64 percent), minority students (+42 percent) and honors students (+82 percent), and students from 421 high schools (up from 303 last year) and 54 counties (up from 37 last year). And residence halls are at capacity. Virus Hunter Nathan Wolfe, the Indiana Jones of virus hunting, presents the YSU Skeggs Lecture 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 8, in Stambaugh Auditorium. Lecture is free, but tickets are mandatory and available at the Stambaugh box office.
