East Central Regional Center for College Tech Prep

The East Central Regional Center (ECRC) for College Tech Prep is one of six centers across Ohio geared towards creating articulation and easing the transition to college for students in career-technical education. The ECRC is formed through collaboration among Kent State University, Stark State College, The University of Akron, and Youngstown State University. These four postsecondary institutions will ensure northeast Ohio students have access to meaningful articulation agreements and educators throughout the region are supported.

In July 2011, the Ohio Department of Education and the Ohio Board of Regents released an RFP in order to develop six regional Tech Prep/Program of Study (POS) support centers in Ohio. In August 2011, the proposal submitted by Kent State University (KSU), The University of Akron (UA), and Youngstown State University (YSU) was funded with the goal of providing all Tech Prep/POS support for the East Central Region of the state.

Through this joint venture, the four institutions have come together in a unique partnership with the goal of supporting students, teachers, counselors, and administrators. The main purpose of the collaboration is to create meaningful articulation agreements with local secondary high schools and Career Technical Planning Districts. In addition, a partnership with High Schools That Work has been established in order to provide valuable free professional development for educators in northeast Ohio. Topics were requested from secondary administrators and the professional development series was, and continues to be, built around those needs.

As the ECRC develops, we look forward to being a valuable partner in increasing the number of college graduates in Ohio and creating a highly-qualified, highly-skilled, and high-paid workforce in Ohio.

College Tech Prep programs of study combine college prep academic courses with advanced training in the latest technologies. They are a planned sequence of study in a technology area beginning in the 11th grade and continuing through an approved apprenticeship, certificate, associate, or baccalaureate degree program. This sequence is designed to avoid duplication of coursework and in a seamless career pathway.

Each College Tech Prep/career-technical program of study is designed with a common core of proficiency in communications, mathematics, science, and technology. Technical curricula are designed based on technical competencies developed by secondary education, postsecondary education, business/industry, and labor.

Students take college prep academic courses in their home school for a half-day and technical courses at Choffin Career and Technical Center in Youngstown, Ohio or the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center in Canfield, Ohio for the other half-day. In addition to classroom instruction, students have the opportunity to participate in work-based learning experiences. They are directly exposed to hi-tech careers through mentoring, job shadowing, internships (paid and unpaid), and part-time employment.
